In his Eugenics and Other Evils, G.K. Chesterton wrote,

Most tyrannies have been possible because men moved too late. It is often essential to resist a tyranny before it exists. It is no answer to say, with a distant optimism, that the scheme is only in the air. A blow from a hatchet can only be parried while it is in the air.

The hatchet is in the air. The government has taken one of our churches all the way to the Supreme Court. The President of the LCMS has testified before congress. The Roman bishops have spoken with one voice. Yet the offensive continues, and largely the clergy in our church are silent. Business continues as usual. Except the day is coming soon when either we will have to disobey the government, or accommodate ourselves to the creeping tyranny. Choosing accommodation, tyranny will take another step, and then another, until finally the Christianity we profess will be unrecognizable. Cowering in churches, incapable of living as Christians outside of them. What then will come of all the talk of mission?

“Most tyrannies have been possible because men moved too late.” Stand Up for Religious Freedom tomorrow, March 23. Then tell your fellow Christians on Sunday what is happening. A radical shift is occurring in America, and it’s happening right now. The government is knowingly, willfully disregarding the First Amendment.

The hatchet is in the air. Parry it now, or suffer its blow.
