Affliction from God is better than the joys of the world

Luther, again, on the great blessings God bestows on Leah: So far we have heard how Jacob, after the nuptials with Leah and Rachel, begot four sons from that despised and neglected Leah. With this example God shows that He is propitious and favorably disposed toward those who are humble, afflicted, and cast off, so that all who labor and are heavy-laden (cf. Matt. 11:28) have no grounds for complaint, especially if they believe in God and are not overcome by impatience and indignation. For it is much better to be afflicted and troubled when God laughs and is favorably disposed than to be fortunate when God is angry.
