Higher Things 2008 Conference Divine Service Sermon

Posted on July 31st, 2008

We interrupt this vacation to bring you the sermon I preached at last month’s Higher Things Conference in Scranton (“The Electric City”). The texts were Acts 2 and Luke 24; the conference theme was “Amen.” It is an incredible joy to preach at these conferences – almost as much fun, but not nearly as terrifying, as playing the organ in Kramer Chapel for a service. David Kind, pastor of University Lutheran Chapel, did a phenomenal job as conference chaplain – and also preached a very fine sermon. Going dark

I probably won’t post again until Saturday. The WiFi connection in my dorm room at the University of Scranton is spotty, and after all, I’m supposed to be actually doing HT stuff (well, once I finish my sermon). Issues, Etc. Interview

Issues, Etc. interviewed me regarding my presentation “Driving the Devil Away” at last summer’s Higher Things youth conference “For You” in Asheville, NC. You can listen to it here. My vicarage superivisor (David Nehrenz at Trinity, Norman, Oklahoma, 1995-1996) made me listen to my sermons on tape. Who can bear such torture? This format was a new and strange experience for me. It was easily the fastest half-hour of my life. Not having a clock in front of me, I was holding back some of my material, thinking, “Oh my goodness – we’ve only talked for five minutes and I’m going to run out of…

FOR YOU: Sermon on John 3.16-21

Posted on August 7th, 2007

Sermon at the opening Divine Service for the Higher Things Youth Conference held in Asheville, NC last week: “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” +INJ+ For you, God made the world. Because of you, it is a sewer. For you, God gave parents. Because of you, they have wept. For you, God made a body. But you have done corrupt things with it. For you, God made a mouth. But you have used it to speak lies, gossip, and words that tear down but do not build up. For you, God made ears. But you have paid more heed to pop culture than the Word of God. So…
