Sermo Dei: Christmas Eve (early)

Posted on December 24th, 2012

I’d prefer not to depend upon God. He seems, to my selfish heart, unreliable. Better to depend on things that seem more stable, more immediate: the money I can spend, the muscles I can flex, the authority and influence I can wield, the alliances I can make. Relying on God is for losers. Better to make your own way, cut your own deal, implement your own strategy. Tell the story in your favor, deceive, even outright lie if you have to, so that you can stay in the game, stay on top. Relying on God is for losers. So thought King Ahaz. He’s the one to whom the Immanuel prophecy is addressed: “The virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his…

Immanuel’s altar crucifix

Kevin Wolf, a freelance photographer and member of Immanuel, has taken some very nice pictures recently. These are some that I’ve posted on Immanuel’s homepage image rotator, including the most recent image of our altar crucifix. I’ve altered them from his originals to fit the requirements of our webpage, and photographers with keen eyes will see problems with the “grid.” The fault is mine, not Kevin’s.

Most Frequently Sung Hymns at Immanuel, 2007-2010

Posted on September 24th, 2010

Paul McCain recently posted statistics on the 24 most frequently sung hymns in the LCMS as reported by users of Lutheran Service Builder. I wondered how Immanuel’s list would compare. Fortunately, this is easy to calculate, as my dear wife Kassie tracks our hymn usage in a spreadsheet. From January, 2007, through the beginning of September, 2010, here are the 25 (25 because there was a tie between the last two) most frequently sung hymns at Immanuel. (Note, this doesn’t include hymns sung at our midweek evening services or school chapel services, which we don’t track.) All hymns are from Lutheran Service Book, which we began using in December 2006. O Lord, We Praise Thee Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness Lord Jesus Christ, We…

Wonderful Day

Posted on July 11th, 2010

Today saw the culmination of several efforts which have occupied my time lately. Hana, a woman from Ethiopia and the mother of two students at our parish school, was confirmed and received her first Communion today. Also, Robert Kieselowsky was installed as vicar at Immanuel at today’s Divine Service. It is a convertible vicarage, meaning that he will, Deo volente, stay at Immanuel after his ordination as an associate pastor and headmaster of our growing school. This has been a long road, with quite a few challenges, so it is a great relief to finally get to this point. I’m amazed at how richly the LORD has blessed Immanuel!

March for Life this Friday

Posted on January 19th, 2010

Friday, January 22 is the March for Life, an annual peaceful demonstration in our nation’s capital asking for the right to life for every human person to be protected. Lutherans will gather under the Lutherans for Life banner at 12pm at 7th & Independence.  Besides the participation from locals, Lutherans from around the country usually join us. We know of a bus from Indiana and another from Michigan who will be with us, and we just heard today of a school group from Louisiana who also will be in attendance. You are cordially invited to begin the day with worship; Divine Service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alexandria (1801 Russell Road, 22301) at 9 a.m. The previously-announced preacher, Rev. Matthew Harrison…
