He’s worried, the man who wrote our opening Psalm. “Hear, O Lord,” means, “Are you listening?” He seeks the Lord’s face – yet begs, “Hide not your face from me.” Why is He not listening? Why does His face appear hidden? ISIS blows up children in Manchester; Coptic Christians are gunned down in Egypt’s desert. Did the Lord not hear them? Why does His face appear hidden? There you stand, at the grave of your wife. There you stumble, at the difficult moments of your life. There you weep, as your child struggles and suffers. Dear Carla, Henry and Harry, parents and friends of Roy, brothers and sisters in Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Can we blame Martha and Mary for being angry with Jesus (John 11)? Their brother Lazarus is dead, and Jesus—supposedly their close friend—was nowhere to be found. He even misses the funeral! By the time Jesus shows up, Lazarus is buried. When Jesus arrives, Martha comes out to meet Him, but Mary stays in the house. She won’t even talk to Jesus. But Martha levels her accusation: Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died.” You know how she feels. Eventually Mary comes out, and she says the same thing: “Lord,…

Exaudi: Hear, O Lord!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ JESUS, Yesterday was Exaudi, the Sunday between Ascension and Pentecost. Exaudi is the first word of the Introit in Latin, and it means “Hear.” The verses (from Psalm 27) read: Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice! Thy face, Lord, I will seek. Do not hide Thy face from me. This is the cry of one afraid. The Psalmist is facing war. Enemy soldiers have set up camp all around him. People have told lies that have led to his condemnation. In all of this we see a picture of our Lord JESUS and His passion. “False witnesses have risen against me, and such as breathe out violence.” There is one thing to do, and one…
