My friend David Petersen (at least I think it was him; I can’t find it now), pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, wrote somewhere recently, “Preach the Sunday, not the text.” I was thinking about that during the reading of the first lesson yesterday, Ezekiel 37.1-14, on the valley of the dry bones. I became very disappointed with the sermon I was about to preach, as I began to realize all the ways it could have been improved by a more careful consideration of the day’s propers. “Peace to you.” They are the very first words the risen Lord Jesus says to the gathered disciples on Easter evening. Something important there. “Peace to you.” Those words summarize the result of Jesus’ work. What does it mean that Jesus died? “Peace to you.” What does it mean that Jesus rose again? “Peace to you.” What now is God’s attitude to you? “Peace to you.” It’s what everyone is searching for. World peace. Inner peace. But the fundamental condition of mankind is a lack of peace.

As we approach Quasimodo Geniti, click here to read an evaluation I wrote on that day’s Hauptlied. One year ago I was contemplating what to put on my protest sign for the Pope’s visit to the White House. The report on “Operation Nice Hat” is here.
