Economic freedom and sinful desire
Posted on November 30th, 2012
Our perception is so skewed by our context that we assume that the “desire to be rich” is the desire to be the kind of multimillionaire with which we’re so familiar in our culture. The definition of “rich” in Scripture doesn’t even contemplate such hyperwealth. It is instead economic freedom, security. The riches described about Nebuchadnezzar and Herod and the oppressors “fattened” by luxury and self-indulgence in Amos and James are far less luxurious than what one would see in a working-class American household today.
