Gospel: Luke 7.11-17 Note: Part of this sermon reflects on the confirmation of three adults at this service. You are merely matter. Stuff, sludge, a mutated creature without a creator, risen up from a primordial stew. You are merely matter, and therefore you do not matter – your life is of no significance, and in fact, it would be better for the earth if you did not exist. You are a polluting gasbag, damaging the ecosystem. You are a blight on the planet. You are merely matter, and you do not matter. Such is the message of the New Atheists. Some of them hate you, and it is really a hatred of themselves, a hatred of humanity. They are not humanists, they are anti-humanists.…

From Sept. 27, 2009 Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 The American religion tends to equate faith with success, prosperity, and health. If you lead a good life, good things will come to you. One slogan puts it this way: “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” The first part is true. But God’s plan for the followers of Jesus might not be what the world calls “wonderful.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s famous saying is more accurate: “When God calls a man, He bids him come and die.” Faith or obedience will not eliminate tribulations in our life. Afflictions come to the faithful to strengthen their faith further. Whom the Lord loves, He chastens.

The story of Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath is very familiar, as it occurs in the lectionary every year (Trinity 15 and 16). Today’s OT reading in the TDP (1 Kings 16:29–17:24) cast a different light on that story for me this morning. Before Elijah goes to the Widow of Zarephath and asks her for water and bread, Elijah had been in hiding by the brook Cherith. During the divinely-imposed drought, Elijah received his water from the brook, and food was brought to him by ravens each morning and evening. As the ancient Israelites received their manna at the appointed time, so Elijah received his food. In all of this, they were learning through experience the petition, “Give us this day our daily…
