God’s will regarding new forms of worship

Posted on February 23rd, 2013

This is true, indeed, that God is not bound, neither to Jerusalem nor to any other place, and that He is able to save also elsewhere. No one will deny this. But try it and see what you will get! If you invent forms of worship according to your own judgment, you will be in danger of God’s wrath. By His almighty power God could save the human race without Christ, without Baptism, and without the Word of the Gospel. He could have illuminated men’s hearts inwardly through the Holy Spirit and forgiven their sins without the ministry of the Word and of ministers. But it was not His will to do so. And God very strictly prohibited all erring forms of devotion and…

Beecroft: Who decides?

Posted on January 18th, 2010

Pr. Mason Beecroft has written a very important post reflecting on a question arising out of the LCMS “Model Theological Conference” on worship. Here is a sample: So who decides [what is liturgically appropriate, reverent, sacramental]? The question itself reflects an unholy amnesia, a loss of identity. Certainly each pastor and each congregation should not be making those decisions. The liturgy is too important to be left in the hands of a pastor whose seminary training in liturgical and sacramental theology is shamefully lacking. It is too important to be decided upon by our congregations in some democratic form, especially when so few of them have been formed or catechized by the historic liturgies of the church. Certainly, the needs of the American consumer…

Trinity 14

Gospel: Luke 17.11-17 “He shall dwell alone; his habitation shall be outside the camp.” Thus it was written in the Law of Moses concerning the leper. He was cast out. Ostracized. Condemned to a life of solitude, as his flesh rotted away. “He shall dwell alone.” The leper is not alone in being alone. God created us for the purpose of loving us; and being made in the image of God, we were created to be like God, to live sharing in His love. God made our first father to be in communion with Him and in community with his wife.

Psalm 29

Tonight’s psalm exhorts us to “Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.” “Splendor” by itself in the Bible means “beauty.” It can refer to radiant things seen in nature, a handsome man, or the luxuries of wealthy people. Proverbs 31 uses it to describe the ideal wife. It often describes the majesty of the king, and is used as a verb to describe beautiful clothing. This diversity of applications has led to two traditions in English Bible translations of the phrase in Ps. 29.2, “Splendor of holiness.” That phrase occurs four times in the OT. KJV: “Beauty of holiness”; RSV: “Holy array,” a reference to the sacred vestments worn by the priests. Recent research in ancient texts [source: TWOT], however, suggests a third…
