The Words of Jesus Are the Power of the Divine Service

Luther writes in the Babylonian Captivity:

The whole power of the mass consists in the words of Christ, in which he testifies that forgiveness of sins is bestowed on all those who believe that his body is given and his blood poured out for them. This is why nothing is more important for those who go to hear mass than to ponder these words diligently and in full faith. Unless they do this, all else that they do is in vain.

Luther’s Works, Vol. 36, p43

This is why, in Luther’s reform of the Mass (Divine Service), he had the words be chanted by the pastor, where previously they were spoken. He wanted the sound to carry so all the people could hear it (in a language they understand). Chanting forces the pastor to slow down, and fight his tendency to rush through them.

These words are probably the most important thing a pastor will say on most Sunday mornings. They deserve the highest attention.
